An important (and overlooked aspect) of itinerary planning is where to spend your jet lag day. You know, that time when you’ve crammed yourself into at least two flights, failed to sleep, eaten airplane dinners with weird meat and dubious gravy, gone way too long without showering or brushing your teeth and then—hooray!—all that’s over, you’ve arrived. Time to site see. Whenever possible, you want to spend your jet lag day at a pleasant, but not too intellectually taxing location.
On our recent trip to Romania we flew into Bucharest and immediately jumped on a train to Brasov, which turned out to be the ideal jet lag destination. Brasov is relaxing, Brasov is pedestrian friendly, Brasov is inexpensive, and Brasov is so damn pretty.
Didn’t I tell you Brasov is pretty?
Once ruled by Saxons, Brasov has a medieval German fairy tale ambiance. This is the gothic era Black Church.
Another thing that makes Brasov a perfect jet lag destination: pedestrian zones. Lots of them. No worry about dodging traffic—just stroll about and admire rows of pastel buildings with the Carpathian Mountains peeking out in the background.

Our WTF moment in Brasov was this sign for a waxing salon. Why is it in English? Are there just tons of Americans and Brits desperately seeking a Transylvanian Brazilian? And what’s with the push-pin font?
Nothing better after a long relaxing jet lag day than to shower and dry off with a regally-arranged scroll towel….

Romania has a lot of adds in English. Even if it’s a non-English speaking country most of the young people speak English very good. So don’t be afraid to ask for directions. And have fun in Romania 🙂
