Sculptures have weird necks in Tallinn

Tallinn is a beautiful city.

Tallinn is a beautiful city full of sculptures with weird necks.

HOB and I were checking out St. Nicholas Church in Tallinn and we saw this sculpture by the front door.  “Whoa!” I said, in my most eloquent and sophisticated tone “that dude has a weird neck!!!”  Then, on realizing that the church was also a museum—the Niguliste Museum—HOB went inside in search of more weird necks.

Niguliste Museum is famous for a Danse Macabre–themed painting which I thought was kind of meh.  Much more to my liking: this St. Christopher sculpture.  I love his dynamic pose, his belt-purse and his pretty boy curls.

And his weird neck.

The museum also showcases a carved, gilded altar.

This ill-proportioned fellow is channeling Mitch McConnell in the neck department, poor thing.

Giant hands, check.

Weird neck, check.

The museum also had some hilarious paintings.

I’m not sure Mary has a weird neck, but her breast is coming straight out of her collarbone.

creepycollars

No doubt the cross-eyed choir guys are covering their creepy necks up with pilgrim collars.

hobhappyanniversary

After we looked at the weird necks, HOB and I went to the market where he ordered a mushroom and onion pie.

Today HOB and I are celebrating 21 years together.  Happy Anniversary HOB—I think you have a very nice neck.

How we got to Tallinn: flight from Chicago (with a layover in Stockholm).
Where we slept: Tallinn City Apartments – Town Hall Square.  Price: €48.60 for a double. Recommended: yes.

    1. Thank you Helen! I’ve been enjoying your salty commentary on French politics. I’m so happy for our WordPress reunion. I’ve had a few of those hissy fits but they’ve all been of my own making (due to my lack of technical skills).

  6. Congrats on 21 blissful years! It looks like a marriage of true minds–and necks. I so want to get to Tallin but flights seem to be super expensive. Maybe a boat from Helsinki…

    1. That’s strange that the tickets are so expensive from Sweden since it is just over an hour flight. I hope you do make it to Estonia. The area called Setomaa is really quite special, but I liked Tallinn and Tartu a lot too.

      1. Right, I was looking at flights from Minneapolis or Denver. Much easier once I get myself back to Scandinavia. Working on it!

  7. Happy anniversary. Are those really Estonians in the market? They seem to have pretty ordinary necks.

    1. Confirming. To clarify, they all seem to have ordinary necks. Their outlet for freaky necks is exclusively via sculptural objects.

    2. Yes, maybe the local artists’ models had a congenital deformity, or there was something in the water supply that gave them goitres etc

      1. You guys are cracking me up. Well anyway these days the Estonian’s are perfectly attractive people so they must have got all those goiters and enlarged thyroids under control.
