Dublin: Run to the Theatre, Run Away from the Stewed Prunes

Take some advice from a legit theatre nerd: go see theatre in Dublin.

I chose my hotel because it is next to Abbey Theatre, a company I saw in Chicago years ago and was determined to see again.

The first play I went to in Abbey Theatre was in the smaller space.

I came back again to see another show on the main stage.

Not only was the acting excellent, but the seats were cheap—my ticket for the main stage show was €13. Also, shout out to the fine box office staff who gave me an arts worker discount.

I also watched a show at Smock Alley Theatre, another good and affordable show in a unique space (but oh man, those uncomfortable seats!)

One more piece of advice: let’s say you’re staying at a lovely hotel next to the Abbey Theatre and that hotel offers delicious stewed prunes for breakfast. I strongly recommend you do not consume a bowl prior to setting out for a day of sightseeing. (The explosive results may be the reason I’m staying in writing this blog post, rather than catching yet another theatre performance.)

How I got to Dublin: flight from Chicago.

Where I slept: Wynn’s Hotel.  Price: €178 for a single. Recommended: yes.
